To supplement our tips on decision-making, this week we’re sharing some great resources to help you understand the cognitive processes behind effective decision-making, as well as practical tools and techniques to help you make proactive choices.

Books on Decision-Making – the background

An intellectual yet very entertaining read – Thinking Fast and Slow offers amazing insight into the world of human reasoning and conscious and unconscious thinking. books on decision-makingHow We Decide by Jonah Lehrer

Lehrer weaves lessons from the cutting-edge of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy and politics to show how human decision-making and our understanding of it has evolved. Using compelling case studies from history, he offers huge insight into human choice as well as practical advice for using this information to help us in our daily lives.

books on decision-makingBlink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell. books on decision-makingThe 5 Second Rule – how to transform your life, work and confidence with everyday courage by Mel Robbins

This book does what it says on the tin. Mel Robbins shows how we can overcome habits and patterns of procrastination by using the ‘5 second rule’. She teaches us to recognise ‘push moments’ in our lives, and how to then use the 5 second rule as a technique to make swift, proactive choices at these critical times.

books on decision-makingSmart Choices – a practical guide to making better decisions by John S. Hammon, Ralph L.Keeney and Howard Raiffa

books on decision-makingNudge – improving decisions about health, wealth and happiness by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein

This book explores the choices we make and shows how we can learn to make better ones. In demonstrating that we are all susceptible to unconscious bias, Thaler and Sunstein suggest that many of our decisions can be poor ones. By understanding how and why we think like we do, they believe it should be possible to ‘nudge’ people into a better direction for decision-making without restricting their freedom of choice.

Apps on Decision-Making

I’m not for one minute suggesting that you let an app or algorithm make important decisions for you – that’s all a bit too Blade Runner for my liking! However – they can be helpful in getting you to focus on the decisions in hand and in prompting you to take action.
